What to bring on a lagoon tour

Most of the kit is provided on a Bora Bora lagoon day, so the packing list is short. Here is what the operators supply, what they ask you to bring and what guests wish they had packed.

A beach bag, swim shirt, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, dry bag and phone pouch on white sand
A short list: swimwear, sun protection and a waterproof pouch.

Booking choice: The Lagoon Service full day, from $172 per person. Check dates Compare the options below

You spend the day in and out of the water and on a sunny motu, so sun protection matters more than anything you carry.

What is provided differs by operator: Lagoon Service supplies snorkel gear and towels, Manu does not supply towels or fins.

The quick answer

Bring a swimsuit (worn under your clothes), sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, which the operator asks for, plus a waterproof phone pouch and a dry layer for the ride back. Lagoon Service provides snorkel gear, towels, water, soft drinks and lunch.

Snorkel masks, fins and a towel on the deck of an outrigger canoe
Masks, snorkels, fins and towels come with the Lagoon Service day.

What does Lagoon Service provide?

Snorkel equipment, towels, bottled water, soft drinks and a buffet lunch on a motu.

You do not need your own mask or fins on this tour. If you have a mask that fits you well, it does no harm to bring it.

What should you wear?

Your swimsuit under light clothes, plus a hat and sunglasses for the boat and the motu.

The canoe has a large awning for shade, but you spend hours in the sun on the water and on the sand. A long-sleeved swim shirt saves reapplying sunscreen on your back while you snorkel.

The covered canoe gives shade between the stops.

Which sunscreen should you bring?

Plenty of it, applied before pickup; a reef-safe formula is kinder to the coral you swim over.

The operator asks guests to bring sunscreen, and Manu lists it as not included. Put it on half an hour before you get in the water, and reapply at lunch.

How do you take photos in the water?

With a waterproof phone pouch or an action camera: the shark and ray stops are in clear water.

Keep a strap on whatever you take into the water. Leave valuables you do not need at your hotel.

Do you need cash on the tour?

Not much: the Lagoon Service day includes lunch and soft drinks, so only bring cash for a tip if you want to leave one.

On Vavau's and Moana's tours gratuities are listed as not included. A little local cash or a card is useful for tips.

What else is worth packing?

A dry bag, a light dry layer for the ride back, a refillable water bottle and any seasickness remedy you normally use.

Spray from the canoe and a breeze on the way back can feel cool after hours in the water. A small dry bag keeps your phone, layer and towel together.

What if you have a special diet?

Tell the operator when you book: one guest was made a vegetarian main on request.

The lunch is a buffet of local dishes. If you have an allergy, mention it in your booking and again when you board.

Frequently asked questions

Should I bring my own snorkel?

Not on Lagoon Service's day, which provides snorkel equipment. On Moana's tour a mask and snorkel are provided and they suggest bringing your own if you have one.

Do I need water shoes?

None of the listings asks for them. If you have sensitive feet, light water shoes help on the motu beach.

Are towels provided?

Yes on Lagoon Service's tours and Reef Discovery; Manu asks you to bring your own.
