Bora Bora lagoon tour with kids

Snorkelling with rays and reef sharks is a dream day for children who can swim. Here is what each operator allows, what it costs and how to pick a tour that suits your family.

The rules differ by operator, and the Viator listing and an operator's own page do not always agree, so check ages before you book.

The key question for any child is swimming: Lagoon Service says you need to know how to swim.

The quick answer

Lagoon Service's tours have a child rate for ages 4 to 12. The Viator listing lets infants up to 3 sit on a lap, but another seller's description of the same day (Manawa) says from 4 years, so ask before booking with a baby. Children need to be able to swim; for young children a half day is often easier.

What are the minimum ages on each tour?

Most lagoon tours take children from about 3 to 5 years, with child rates up to 11 or 12.

Do children need to swim?

Yes for Lagoon Service, which says it is necessary to know how to swim.

The stingray stop is in shallow water, which suits confident young swimmers. On H2O's tour one guest mentioned life jackets and pool noodles on board. If your child cannot swim yet, ask the operator before booking.

Is the full day too long for young children?

It can be: six hours in the sun is a lot for a small child, which is why a half day is often the better first trip.

Two H2O guests felt even their morning snorkel was not ideal for very young children, one of them with a 4-year-old. On the other hand, one Lagoon Service family wrote that it felt safe for kids and that the captain really cared about their baby. You know your child best.

How much do children pay?

Less than adults on every tour here: Lagoon Service gives a discounted rate to ages 4 to 12.

The adult from-prices run from $112 (Moana) to $193 (Rohivai). Child prices show at checkout once you add ages. See lagoon tour prices for every option.

What should families pack?

Swimwear, sunscreen, hats, a long-sleeved swim shirt for each child and a dry layer for the ride back.

Lagoon Service provides masks, fins and towels. A child who has practised with a mask in a pool or on the beach beforehand will enjoy the stops more. More in what to bring.

Is there shade on board?

Yes: Lagoon Service's canoes have a large awning to shelter you from the sun.

Keep hats on and reapply sunscreen at lunch.

What if your child does not want to snorkel?

They can stay on the boat: the shark swim is optional, and the motu lunch and the boat ride are fun on their own.

For children who do not like the water at all, the 4WD island tour (from $85, child rate 3 to 11) shows the lagoon from lookouts instead.
